T-SQUAT.COM - Review
Killing things can be a sordid business and it’s generally not a very nice thing to do. Time is one exception. Time is there for the killing – a victimless crime best committed while you wait for your next scheme to hatch.
Finding time ripe for the killing was Cam Smith when he took over a lease on a shop up the Windsor end of Chapel Street, Melbourne. Originally meant for his clothing label, the designer and jack of too many other trades to mention thought: why not make my shopfront into a bar?
Killing Time was the result, a bar like no other on Chapel Street or just about anywhere else. With little money to put into the venture to start with, Cam took about a year to fit out the shopfront with recycled materials salvaged from junk yards and an old local pub. Cam’s pride and joy is the bar, cobbled together with vintage metal ceiling panels that form a surprisingly beautiful juxtaposition with the bar’s otherwise rough edges.
Beyond the bar lies a courtyard with trees bearing strange skeleton fruit and fences scribbled with haphazard messages. Inside, the venue is broken into discreet enclaves, custom made for revellers to lounge around in private. Half embedded in a wall is an old tree, its craggy branches spreading across the length of the main room. Couches make way for a pocket-rocket sized dance floor rumoured to have been the stomping ground for some of the world’s top touring DJs.
Cam’s coy about who has paid him a visit but confirms some big names have killed some time of their own at his bar. Word-of-mouth has seen Killing Time become the unofficial venue of choice for DJs in search of a venue with the right kind of ambience to give them some respite off the back of frenetic international tours.
If Killing Time is like anywhere else on the planet, Berlin comes to mind. Cam says he’s never been to Berlin on his many travels but he’s heard plenty of Germans make the connection. Maybe it’s the bar’s industrial edginess and quirky old world charm or maybe it’s the ingenuity of how Killing Time came into this world: born of necessity to be effortlessly cool.
